All liturgical ministers are, first and foremost, members of the Body of Christ. Through their baptism, they are “holy people and royal priesthood” whose right and privilege it is to participate in the ministry of Christ. Some of the faithful are called to serve God’s people in a more particular way, through one of the many liturgical ministries that have flourished in the Church since the Second Vatican Council. This diversity of roles, functions and ministries enriches our celebrations and assists us in our prayer. Serving in one of these ministries is both an honor and a responsibility.

The ministry of the Lector is one of the most important ministries. The responsibility of proclaiming God’s Word for the Christian assembly is a humbling and deeply rewarding experience. When the sacred scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to His people. Lectors are called to a deep relationship with God in order that God’s Word may reach the hearts and souls of the listeners. The Lector proclaims the Word in a way that is respectful, understandable and meaningful to the congregation. The Lector ministry keeps alive the memory of how God has acted in nature and history from age to age, especially in the story of the Jewish people and, above all, in the gift of Jesus Christ and the Church.
